Utility Grants You Might Be Missing

Energy bills are rising, but you may be able to get help without knowing it.

Across the UK, there are grants and schemes that can reduce what you pay-or help with heating, repairs, or energy efficiency upgrades. Here’s what you need to know.

What are energy grants?

Grants are free money or discounts from the government, energy suppliers, or local councils to help with energy costs.

Key schemes in 2025:

  • Warm Home Discount – £150 off your winter electricity bill if you’re on a low income or receive certain benefits. Check eligibility and apply via your energy provider.
  • Cold Weather Payment – £25 for each 7-day period of cold weather between November and March. Paid automatically if you get qualifying benefits.
  • Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) – Grants of up to £7,500 for replacing old gas boilers with heat pumps. Apply via installer: uk/apply-boiler-upgrade
  • Local Energy Grants – Many councils run support schemes. Example: Leeds City Council offers insulation and boiler help.

How to check what you’re eligible for:

Example:

Jade, a single mum in Manchester, got a £150 Warm Home Discount and £25 Cold Weather Payment during December 2024. She also applied to her council for loft insulation, cutting her bill by £300/year.

Final tip:

Always call your energy provider if you’re struggling – they may have extra help, payment plans or hardship funds.
